Excited to announce the arrival of our new Sambava trio!

Long awaited our male and two unrelated females are arriving this weekend after a long trip … for the pick up we are overnighting in a motel to make it easier on both us and them.

Stay tuned for further updates on how they settle in and adjust to their new home.

And hopefully in a year or so we will be able to offer some spectacular offspring!

In the meantime I know I will enjoy every minute of having them in our home, as all panthers have such unique personalities … some enjoy resting on certain plants, once accustomed they can’t wait to be fed and look for the pair of feeding tongs to enter their cage, the joy to see them lap up dripping water and catch their food is truly an awesome site to witness!

I also believe that at this time “Here Lizard Lizard” will be the second folks within Canada to offer the panther chameleons from the region of Sambava.

If you would like to learn more about Sambavas please see our previous post covering a Brief Description. Care sheets on the panther chameleons will be available within the next month, as we currently have our hands full doing many other things.

Leopard geckos (Eublepharis macularius) are nocturnal lizards, meaning they are more active during the evening and early daylight hours. They are ground dwelling lizards that originate from desert areas in Afghanistan, Pakistan, and western India. Being nocturnal they also DO NOT require UVB lighting!

The Leopard Gecko is a popular pet because of their ability to thrive in captivity, fairly ease of care, their docile dispositions and their openess to being handled by their owners (each has its own charming personality).

Leopard Geckos are also a fairly small lizard, with males being typically larger than females growing to approximately 9 inches in length. They have been known in captivity to live up to 20 years with some owners attesting to a lifespan of over 30 years! So when considering a Leopard Gecko as a pet one should be prepared for a long term commitment to this new pet.

In captivity as long as they are properly fed and housed, kept within a clean enclosure, the Leopard Gecko is a hardy lizard unlikely to have health problems.

Many owners of Leopard Geckos also love the fact that they will select one area of their cage to defecate, making cleanup a fairly easy task. They can also be maintained in groups providing the tank is large enough and has plenty of hide areas. NOTE that you may keep groups of females together OR several females and one male but NEVER put more than one male together as they will fight to the death!

For more details about the Leopard Gecko see our Leopard Gecko Care Sheet.

Reptiles are solar powered as every aspect of their lives is governed by their daily experience of solar light and heat.

The length of the day and night hours, how high the sun is in the sky and the intensity of the sunlight all provide reptiles with information about the time of day and the season within the year. Reptiles adjust their daily activity levels and change their behaviours such as reproductive cycles and thermoregulation based on this information. Even species which are nocturnal change their behaviours by monitoring “day” and “night”.

Since no matter how carefully we place our lights, or the types of lights and strengths used, the number of hours on or off, they simply can’t beat the experience of Natural Daylight/Sunlight. This doesn’t always mean full sun, in fact ensuring your reptile has an escape to shaded areas or cool spots is certainly a must, with adequate water for hydration as well.

The UVB rays in sunlight have a direct affect on a reptiles’ immune system, this is why lizards will flatten themselves to increase the surface area of their skin that is exposed to the UVB. UVB is also best known for its role in skin synthesis of vitamin D3 in exposed WARM skin.

According to ReptileChannel.com, “Vitamin D3 synthesis in reptiles requires warmth as well as ultraviolet light. UVB converts a cholesterol in the skin to pre-D3, and this is converted into vitamin D3 very rapidly when a reptile is at its optimum temperature. The vitamin is toxic in large amounts, which is one reason giving it as a supplement can be risky (always follow manufacturer instructions regarding supplementation), but reptiles never generate too much D3 in their skin while basking. Natural levels of higher wavelength UVB and UVA prevent overproduction. They convert excess pre-D3 and vitamin D3 into harmless byproducts as soon as they start building up.”

For these reasons, if and when it is possible, providing an outdoor enclosure and exposure to Natural Sunlight/Daylight is very advantageous to many reptiles. For this purpose I would recommend using the very light weight, easy transportable Reptariums by Apogee. They are all mesh, PVC pipe cages which require no tools for assembly.

When weather is not permitting we must closely try to mimick by its artificial equivalent … so careful planning of our lighting system is essential for a healthy reptile indoors.

The second all mesh cage that I purchased was again bought because of its specific size measurement. I was placing this cage within a wooden cabinet where a 30″ w X 16.5″ d X 30″ h would fit just nicely, unfortunately all mesh cages with metal frames usually come 18 w X 18 d X 30″ OR in a 24″ w and d … these were not large enough for this specific setting.

So reluctantly I purchased my second mesh cage with PVC piping style. (I say reluctantly because I already knew the drawbacks from my large cage – see other post)

When I received this cage I ran into the same issues during assembly with the creaking and splitting of the PVC pipe. However on the upside, the full frontal zipper door this time was easier to manage due to this cage’s size.

Again I purchased the SoftTrays because this is the only way to contain the humidity, misting spray and making the cage clean up easier.

I still say though that these cages are simply too flimsy for a long term setup.

They are really intended to be used temporarily, or outdoors with virtually nothing inside of it to make transportation easy or to be used on travel excursions.

They’re certainly handy to place outside on the back deck, and there is nothing better for a lizard (or chameleon ) than some natural sunlight.

My recommendation still stands … for long term use, purchase ALL MESH cages with METAL FRAMING !!
